How To Clean Spills Off A Mattress

Even if your child promised to be very careful and not spill his or her lemonade while sitting on his or her bed, chances are good that you are going to end up having to clean up a spill on the mattress. Here are the steps that you should follow in order to make sure that the mattress is not ruined even though liquid was spilled on it.

1. Dry the Area if There Is Any Excess Liquid

First, remove all of the bedding from the mattress so that you can start cleaning it directly. Throw the bedding to the side so that you can launder it later. Then, take towels or old rags and use them to blot up any excess liquid that hasn't been absorbed by the mattress. This will allow you to minimize the amount of liquid that the mattress absorbs over time and will make it easier to clean up the spill itself. When you are done mopping up the spill, throw the towels or rags in the washing machine on a high heat setting in order to make sure that any bacteria that are on them are removed.

2. Spray Vinegar on the Stain

Take a spray bottle and fill it with white vinegar. Spray the stain lightly so that it isn't soaked but so that you are sure that every part of the stain has been exposed to the vinegar. This will help prevent the stain from setting in the mattress. It also will disinfect the mattress. Allow the vinegar to sit for at least 10 minutes in order to ensure that the stain is loosened adequately.

3. Use Baking Soda

Next, take some baking soda and sprinkle it on the stain. Try to leave no area of the stain uncovered. The baking soda will help absorb the liquid that is in the mattress and help get rid of the color. Take the mattress outside before you sprinkle the baking soda on if you know that it is going to be sunny and warm for a few hours. This will allow you to increase the bleaching power of the baking soda and help dry out the mattress more quickly. If you can't take your mattress outside, leave the baking soda on overnight and turn on all of the fans in the room. Have your child sleep in bed with you or on the couch. When you wake up the next morning, vacuum up the remaining baking soda. Your stain should be gone.

If your mattress is still badly soiled after following these steps, it may be time to talk to a company like Abba's Mattress Outles that specializes in selling mattresses.
