The Best Mattress For Your Child With Scoliosis

Scoliosis is spine condition where the spine curves. The condition can be caused by a nutrition deficiency, genetics, or an injury. Scoliosis comes in a few forms, but the main form of the condition, which is usually diagnosed by the time a child is around 10 years of age, has no known cause. If you have a child who suffers from a curve in their spine, you know they have issues with finding a comfortable way to sleep at night. Pinched sciatic nerves or pain in the shoulders and lower spine caused by a curving skeletal structure can make sleeping difficult, which in turn can make your child cranky and keep them from being able to focus at school. The right mattress can make all the difference, and here are tips to how you can choose the best one for your child.

Lumbar support

You want to choose a mattress that can offer your child ample lumbar support. Their lower back can be put under a lot of strain due to the curve in their spine. Choose a mattress that has a gel or memory foam topper to give them the support they need. This provides custom treatment for their curving spine, whether it curves to the right or the left, and also reduces pressure on their hips and neck.

Extra firm protection

If your child doesn't complain of pain in their spine but their condition requires them to wear a supportive back brace to keep their curvature from worsening, then a firm mattress may be what they need. A mattress with little to no give allows your child's spine to settle into its most natural position as they sleep, which can give them just enough support to keep their scoliosis from getting worse. Talk to your child's pediatrician to see if a firm mattress can benefit their condition most. If they need a small amount of cushioning for their shoulders or hips, you can also invest in a thin foam topper to give them additional comfort.

Your child may have scoliosis, but that doesn't mean they can't sleep comfortably at night. The right mattress can help them get the sleep they need and their pediatrician can give you recommendations for brands or styles of mattresses that will work best for their needs. Talk to your child as well to find out where they ache the most at night to help aid you in your mattress purchasing decision.
